Welcome to Comics In The Classroom!

There has been HUGE debate over the years of whether or not comics, comicstrips, comic books were allowed in the classroom. The dilemma was if comics were a legitmate learning tool; plus comics were considered a cheap low brow form of the visual arts. With the advent of the graphic novel & interest in sequential art as a viable art form; the medium has gained attention from academia & the fine arts community. Many traditionaly trained artists as well as art teachers are embracing this idiom as a way to foster creative learning, a love of reading and act as a bridge for English Language Learners.

Some historians are seeing comics as distant cousins to the  heiroglyphics, tapestries & pictograms of

ancient civilizations like the Phonecians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Anglo-Saxons.

Here is the The Anatomy of a Comic Panel for you to study.

Plus I have a list of Innovative Comic Artists to look at for inspiration.

Make sure you screen the comic art & images if you decide to show them to grades K-12. Show work that is kid-friendly and age appropriate to your classes.
